Srisailam Dam Sees First Gate Opening of Season, Later Closed as Inflows Decline


The Srisailam Dam early monsoon operations began with the opening of four crest gates - 6,7,8 and 11 on July 8 to manage rising floodwaters. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu attended the event and performed Jala Harathi. At the time, inflows exceeded 1.53 lakh cusecs, pushing storage to 200 TMC of its 215.81 TMC capacity, with water levels at 881.6 ft. In the days that followed, inflows steadily decreased. By Tuesday, they had dropped to 50,839 cusecs, prompting the closure of all radial gates. Outflows now serve operational needs, with 33,486 cusecs used by Andhra Pradesh's right power station, 35,315 cusecs by Telangana's left power station, 20,000 cusecs drawn by the Pothireddypadu head regulator, and 1,6000 cusecs for the Mahatma Gandhi Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme. Current storage stands at 200.1971 TMC ft, with water levels at 882.20 ft.
