Rental car from Hyderabad to Bhubaneswar

Named after Tri Bhubaneswar, the lord of the Three Worlds, a title for Lord Shiva, Bhubaneswar is fondly known as the Ekamra Khetra or Temple City. Bhubaneswar isn't just a city of magnificent structures and sacred sites, it is also surrounded by dense green forests. These natural spaces beckon explorers with taste for the wild and offer a home to untamed wildlife.

If you're planning a road trip, taking a rental car from Hyderabad to Bhubaneswar is a great way to soak in the changing landscapes and make pit stops at lesser-known gems along the route. The drive adds a sense of adventure before you even reach the city.

Established in 1948 and designed by the visionary German architect Otto Königsberger, modern Bhubaneswar is a well-planned urban center and a leading Smart city. It's not just about temples, though the city is filled with historic marvels, it's also a hotspot for modern entertainment. Whether you're in the mood for discos, night bars, luxury hotels, or pulsating music, Bhubaneswar has it all.

Yet, the centuries old temples continue to attract spiritual travelers, showcasing the city's beautiful blend of the sacred and the contemporary.

If you're tired of the usual beach and mountain getaways, let Bhubaneswar surprise you. The place isn't your typical vacation spot, and that's exactly why you'll love it. Rich in spiritual heritage and packed with cultural gems, the city has a laid-back charm that instantly draws you in.

But it's not all ancient, it's got a youthful pulse too, with local street food, handicrafts, and friendly folks making it an all-around beautiful place to wander.

Walking through Bhubaneswar's streets, I discovered its lively shopping culture, a paradise for souvenir hunters like me. From delicate applique crafts and Chadua to vibrant ikat textiles and sacred sculptures, the craftsmanship is unmatched.

Though modern malls are scattered around the city, the true heart of shopping lies in its age-old markets and artisan stalls. The best time to go is during the winter months, when the air is crisp and the markets are buzzing with festive energy. Trust me, your bags will be fuller when you leave.

These are a few shops I explored during my stay in Bhubaneswar, and each left a lasting impression. Utkalika, located near Sahid Nagar, was a true gem. It had a stunning collection of traditional Odisha crafts from pattachitra paintings and applique work to tribal jewelry and stone carvings. I could've spent hours browsing. Then there was Orissa Art and Craft near Panthanivas.

Their metallic work, especially the silver filigree or Tarakashi, was absolutely captivating. The level of detail in every piece was incredible, I couldn't resist pickup up a few souvenirs for friends.

If you're considering a road trip, car hire for Hyderabad to Bhubaneswar travel is a flexible and comfortable option to kick off your journey with ease.

In this travel piece, I've picked five of Bhubaneswar’s most iconic temples to feature, each from a different era and with its own unique charm.

First was Lingaraj Temple, massive, ancient, and awe-inspiring, with 108 mini-temples in its courtyard. The scale was unreal.

Ananta Vasudeva Temple was next, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and known for its traditional prasad. It's beautifully placed beside Bindusagar Lake and has a vibe all its own.

Then came the jewel like Mukteshwar Temple, with its picture-perfect archway and exquisite carvings, like stepping into an art gallery of stone.

Rajarani Temple felt more like a museum, thanks to its detailed erotic sculptures and landscaped gardens. It’s ideal for history buffs and curious minds.

Lastly, the mystical Chausath Yogini Temple stood out—circular, minimal, and steeped in tantra. You won’t find anything else like it in the city.

Also During my stay in Bhubaneswar, I made it a point to explore the local food scene and wow, it's a treat! For traditional Odia cuisine, spots like Dalma, Shola Ana Odia, and the Odisha Hotel served some delicious thalis and comforting dishes like Dalma and Pakhala. I also got a unique experience trying the temple food at Ananta Vasudeva Temple, simple but absolutely satisfying.

If you're looking to mix it up, restaurants like Moksha, The Spice Route, and Bhojohori Manna are great options. I loved how The Zaika balanced modern taste with a local touch. I also stumbled upon some cozy things like Blueberries, Cha Khati, and Jugaad Jn. idea places to wind down with coffee and snacks after a day of sightseeing.

For sweets, Nimapara was my go to for authentic. Chhena Poda and Chhena Jhilli. Pahala is famous for Rasagolla, and even if it's a bit touristy, it's fun for the experience. Bhubaneswar’s must-try dishes include Pakhala, Dalma, Odia Thali, Dahi-Bara and their divine diary-based sweets. Whether you're a foodie or a cuisine traveler, this city is a flavor-packed journey.

If you're planning a road adventure, you can easily book a rental car to Bhubaneswar from Hyderabad and make the journey part of the experience.

The close of this chapter

To wrap up, I have to say—Odisha’s climate does bring a fair share of humidity year-round, so pack accordingly. But despite the heat, Bhubaneswar’s incredible temple architecture and spiritual atmosphere make it absolutely worth it. I’m genuinely surprised that this city isn’t more talked about—it’s a treasure trove for culture lovers.
