Rent a Car to Udupi for a Perfect Road Trip
Udupi, one of Karnataka's rapidly growing cities, beautifully balances the old and new. With prestigious educational institutions adding a contemporary charm, it still thrives on its age-old temples, scenic beaches, and the iconic Udupi cuisine. Whether you're on a pilgrimage or seeking offbeat adventures, Udupi won't disappoint. And to truly explore its depth and nearby gems, many travelers choose to rent a car to Udupi, making the journey as scenic as the destination itself.
Looking to explore a town that offers beaches, temples, and mouthwatering food all in one go? Udupi is the place for you. Whether you're a nature buff, history geek, or food explorer, this charming coastal town in Karnataka will leave you with memories to cherish.
Begin your exploration at the sacred Sri Krishna Matha, a 13th-century temple devoted to Lord Krishna. Established by Sri Madhvacharya, it's the only temple in India where Krishna is worshipped as a child. Next, stroll along Kaup Beach, famous for its tall lighthouse, historic Mariamma temples, and remnants of an old fort.
For a lively vibe, visit Malpe Beach just 6 km away. It's a major port and offers stunning visuals of golden sands and blue sea. Close by lies St. Mary's Island, famous for its volcanic rock formations.
Udupi Street Scene
Shopping in Udupi was an unexpected delight during my coastal Karnataka adventure. I started at Shri Laxmi Venkatesh Mall, which had a balanced mix of familiar brand stores and casual shopping options. It was a comfortable space to browse clothes, electronics, and daily essentials.
Then I ventured into City Centre Mall for a more polished experience, it felt like a modern mall in any major city, complete with a cinema and spacious food court.
For something more traditional, Baneka Handicraft was a beautiful find. The items here, wooden toys, brass lamps, and hand carved souvenirs, are steeped in culture. I also strolled through Kadiyali Bazaar, a busy market where bargaining is welcomed and the atmosphere is electric.
Lastly, the Manipal Flea Market added a modern twist to my shopping adventure, offering handmade crafts, indie fashion, and even second-hand books. It's a haven for travelers who love browsing through unexpected treasures. To explore all these local markets and hidden nooks at your own pace, you can rent a car to Udupi for flexible travel.
While Udupi is often known for its temples and beaches by day, the town reveals a quieter charm by night. It's not about flashy clubs or loud music, it's about simplicity, calmness, and cultural connection.
And if you're in town during a festival like Karavali Utsav, be sure to attend. The energy, traditional dance, music, and color spill into the streets until late.
Cafes like Blue Waters and Cafe Coffee Day stay open late and are a great sport to relax, sip tea or coffee, and reflect on your day. Some nights even include live performances that families and couples alike can enjoy.
Lastly, photography lovers will find Udupi a dream at night. With its mix of traditional charm and coastal calm, the town becomes a canvas for beautiful captures after dark.
Spice It Up
As someone who maps journeys with my taste buds, Udupi was a delightful chapter. With every street and corner offering something distinct, the town truly lives up to its culinary reputation.
I began with Diana Restaurant near the city bus stand, known far and wide for seafood. Their Butter Garlic Prawns had a rich flavor profile, savory, slightly spicy, and perfectly tender.
Right around the same area, I dropped by Woodlands, a vegetarian favorite. Their Vegetable Pulao was light but packed with flavor, and the aroma alone made me hungrier.
When in Udipi, I couldn't miss Mitra Samaj, right beside Sri Krishna Temple. Their Masala Dosa, perfectly crisp with a spicy potato filling was a flavorful classic. And thanks to local's tip, I found Thamboolam. Their piping hot Goli Bajji hit the spot, crispy, comforting and full of traditional flavor.
I wrapped it all up at Diana Ice Cream Parlour, indulging in their iconic Gudbud Ice cream, a fun, colorful mix of textures and sweetness.
Seasons
Choosing the right time to visit Udupi isn't just about the weather, it's about syncing with the soul of the town. Winters offer the spiritual hum of temple bells and festive colors, while the rains renew the land and spirit alike.
